<p>In nXt the WalkAbout window allows you to insert and manipulate background images and your viewpoint independently. You can either allow nXt to composite the image for you, or save the thing with a transparent background and composite it in Photoshop or equivalent. You'll need to adjust the resolution (aspect ratio) of the view to match the photo.</p>

<p>AutoCAD also supports background images, so you could manipulate the model in AutoCAD. The aspect ratio stuff is trickier here-- it's often easier to do this in paperspace where you can precisely control the aspect ratio of the viewport.</p>
