<p>Tried them and both methods work. I guess assigning materials in the subfiles would be the more conservative method since I recall losing material definitions in AR4 when links were problematic. On the other hand VISRETAIN would be a much easier method. Thanks again.</p>

I set mine to 0 as the default is 1 and it often does not update when I can material assign in the original files. At 0 it updates.

If you're assigning materials ByLayer, make sure VISRETAIN is set to 1.

<p>First, you have to create your materials in subfiles.</p>
<p>Then, once you open the master, you will see them.</p>
<p>From that moment on, you edit your materials in the master only, materials will not get lost, but remember - changes in material definitions made in the master will not reflect back to subfiles.</p>
