The GPU is a relative new name for the processing unit on the graphics (display) card.  Modern GPUs actually contain very powerful computers, although the architecture of these computers is very different than the main CPU. It is possible, though quite difficult, to use these for raytracing.

GPU?...que significa eso?

Use of the GPU for path tracing is not a panacea.  It's technically very difficult and likely to only benefit those with very fast, expensive, GPUs.  I could easily spend months working on it and have it be slower than CPU rendering for most users.  It is an area we're watching.

Maybe it's time to look more seriously at the possibility to engage GPU in rendering process somehow Roy, isn't it? Now, all this power is just sitting inside our machines without any "substantial" benefits (maybe except some occasional gaming once a year :) )

Lots of lights.  This is a pretty challenging one for the Path Tracer.

Hey, I`ve been working on this project, and i succesfully create a nice night view, I`m very happy with it, but i have a question, this render took 183:17:33 hours and 2583 passes and the quality still needs a few thousands of passes, somebody knows why it took so long I mean I just put some spotlights and omnilights inside the houses, do you think is the water texture? this is my pc configuration:

windows xp profesional sp3
Intel core i7 860 2.8ghz
4gb RAM
