Neither. It's a material. I created a 4 x4 tile pattern in Photoshop rotating and mirroring tiles so that there wasn't an obvious repeat. I then used that as a texture within a material together with a grid and some sand texture.

"Yes it's possible using the walkabout feature. There is an option that allows you to pick a walkthrough spline as your camera path and there is another that makes you glide from side to side across the scene."
