AccuRender nXt

advanced rendering for AutoCAD

Hi, Roy. I can't find the solution to map my wood material on a barrel, with a cylindrical mapping. Is there an autocad issue, or nXt can do something for that? and some normales of faces (triangles) look strange. I made the barrel with the revolution tool. Thanks.

The kind of cylindrical mapping we use (and have always used in previous versions) won't work for a variable radius object.  Internally, I do have a mapping that will work-- I just haven't exposed it yet in the AutoCAD product.  I'll think about doing it (an object prop switch?), but it may be a while.

Marc, I had this issue back in 2009 on build 167. Attached is a sample of what I did. I revolved a barrel as you did, hollowed it and then sliced the staves and assigned different materials to them to add realism. The material has been mapped to the staves, so you should be able to rotate or revolve the object without too much problem. Change out the material to get the look you want. My project required 'new' barrels. Use this if it suits you.

Nice.

I should also add that the 'display resolution' settings should be set high in order to achieve a decent rendering of the barrel rings.

Thanks Roy, I will wait for that very usefull tool.

Thanks a lot Barry. I thought of that solution, but I found it a little bit heavy. I take your files to see.

You're right Marc, It is a bit heavy for most applications. So for your situation, I recommend assigning your material with the QUICK MAPPING feature in nXt. First, as shown in fig.1, draw a BOX that fully includes your model. Do this in wireframe. You are only using the box as a guide and will be erasing this after you have completed the mapping.

Next, after assigning the material to the object, use the QUICK MAPPING tool.

Follow the command prompts and select the ORIGIN, LOWER RIGHT, and UPPER LEFT as shown in figure 2 above. Accept the default ROTATION<0> and mapping type <Box>.

You can now erase the box you drew around your object. Do a quick render to check it. Should be good to go!

I used Marc's barrel model, assigned the OAK barrel material I made to simulate barrel staves.

The result is convincing and is somewhat lightweight. This is a single revolved solid for the barrel body that Marc made.

Mapping material to an object like this, or any object works nicely. Once the material is mapped, you can then copy and paste the object, revolve or rotate it and the mapping remains oriented to the object, as illustrated below. Materials and example DWG file attached .

Thanks a lot Barry, for the time you spend on my problem. I really appreciate your attitude.

Regrettably I have already tried this solution but it did not satisfy me. The mapping was not good on 4 stripes corresponding to the angles of the "gizmo". Then I put the barrel in the background, so that we do not see it too much. If I had to put it in the foreground, I would have chosen the heavy solution. I have to wait that Roy implement the mapping tool in nXt ;)
