did you use HDRI only or did you use sun as well?
HDRI only.
Where and how can one lay hands on such high quality HDRi?

This one was a free sample from here:

www.hdri-locations.com

It seems as if the HDRI used by Peter (200MB) slows preparation phase of a rendering and also makes the system less responsive - might it be true or is it my illusion only?
It will certainly take longer to load.  It will also take quite a bit more memory to hold internally so it may cause swapping (if you run out of physical RAM).  Yes, this could make your system less responsive.
Path tracer?  If so-- the indirect bounce setting is already set to a minimum of 4.  Sometimes, even high-quality hdris from other sources are not calibrated to real world units and need to be scaled-- this one looks like it worked fine without any work.  Scaling can be fine-tuned using channels.

Using the Aloha.dwg as a test scence can you scenerio but with HDRi nd just plain sky/sun and vary combination with results and the actual model added to the tutorial section as a template for us newbies to take up from.

Also down to earth (no high level technical terms) tutorials on HDRi's would be appreciated, how to scale, orientation, know high quality ones, the right multiplier to use in terms of intensity, type etc

Can you set up this scene with the aloha drawing attached to a tread in this post or get post this scene.
Akinlolu, these messages are barely intelligible.  Who are you asking to do what?
The way the website displays the messege boards makes it very difficult to follow some of these threads.
It's a lot worse if the messages aren't clear.
