AccuRender nXt

advanced rendering for AutoCAD

I believe I might have just missed the first AccuRender nXt Webinar..If so what was the topic? How did it go? and when is it likely to be uploaded? Last question... is there a list of likely future Webinars.

Just a thought it would be great to have an industry specific Webinar such as construction, product design etc. My particular interest would be rendering for the furniture industry.

Funiture is easy, you just need a bunch of Peter's wood materials.

I disagree Chas, I have seen some really poor furniture renderings. Materials like metal and plastic etc. are fairly easy to render where as wood has a multitude of characteristics such as long grain, end grain, knots etc. which need to be mapped, scaled and possibly have a gloss effect to simulate varnish. Peter has produced some quality furniture renderings however I have seem lots and produced lots of poor quality images which is why I suggested it as a topic for Webinar.

A furniture webinar would be cool.  Although, I guess we better define what a good furnitutre rendering is.  Does anyone want to post a sample model?  We can all take a run at rendeirng it.

I think Chas was just being funny rather than dismissive.

I deal mostly with veneers so I just map the grain direction for each face.

It's much more complex if you're dealing with solid wood as you'l need textures of all the different cuts, then you'll need to explode your solids and map all the different faces individually.

Alternatively you can try and create a convincing procedural material, but I think that would be nearly impossible.

The biggest nightmare is that face mapping in AutoCAD doesn't rotate with the object.

I just tried mapping a tile pattern to a 3dface w/ a planar map (using Quick Mapping).  It does seem to rotate with the object, including 3d rotations.  I'm not exactly sure what you mean here.  Maybe an example?

Try mapping to an individual face on a solid cube.

I have trouble selecting an individual face with quick mapping for a start.

That's interesting-- yep, the mapping on sub-items doesn't update with the parent item.  That's something to report to Autodesk, I think.

Probably easier to select first, when mapping to a face, using the CTRL key.  Still a pain in the neck in Acad but much better in 2011.

As a workaround, you can force the mapping to hold by turning the solid into a Block once you've set it all.

Hi Roy,

I wonder if that was the issue Ron Eddy was having in his previous posting?

Nope.

Was a general intro, covering basics like installation, starting the software, interface. Also got into basics of lighting and materials. came off pretty good actually. I've "walked out" of autodesk webinars because they were produced very poorly. Mary, Scott and Roy all did a really good job. Can't wait for the next one.

From AR3-4 newsgroups we only knew names, then with nXt we got to see faces, and know we have the voices. :)

Missed it too. When will it be available?
